Provisional Licence Training
Becoming a security officer in NSW
In New South Wales, all persons wishing to become Security Guards must complete Provisional Licence training before they can receive a full security licence with their chosen area of work. The licence (both Provisional and Full) is divided into the following sub-classes.
Class 1A – Unarmed Guards
Authorises the licensee to patrol, protect, watch or guard any property while unarmed (and whether while static or mobile),
Class 1B – Body Guards
Authorises the licensee to act as a bodyguard or to provide close personal protection or to act in a similar capacity,
Class 1C – Crowd Control
Authorises the licensee to act as a crowd controller, venue controller or bouncer or to act in a similar capacity,
Class 1D – Dog Guard Handler
Authorises the licensee to patrol, protect, watch or guard any property with a dog,
Class 1E – Monitoring Centre Operator
Authorises the licensee to patrol, protect, watch or guard any property while carrying on monitoring centre operations,
Class 1F – Armed Guard
Authorises the licensee to patrol, protect, watch or guard approved classes of property while armed (but only under the authority of a licence or permit to use or possess firearms under the Firearms Act 1996),
Class 1G – Loss Prevention Officer
Authorises the licensee to patrol, protect, watch or guard any property while carrying on retail loss prevention
To hold a full class (1A, 1C, 1E & 1G) Security Licence you will need to complete a Certificate II in Security Operations (CPP20207) comprising of two Workplace Assessments or Full class (1B, 1D & 1F) Security Licence you will need to complete a Certificate III in Security Operations (CPP30407) comprising three Workplace Assessments.
